Wicked: Madame Morrible Costume Directory

Madame Morrible has no counterpart in the L Frank Baum series or the 1939 film. She is initially Head Shiztress at Shiz University, but bites and scratches her way to working directly under the Wizard of Oz. She starts out as a rather genial, if not terribly sympathetic character, but (like the Wizard) quickly falls under the category of Villain. In fact, she is probably more villainish than the Wizard himself.
SusanHilferty.com says that her costumes get more and more elaborate throughout the show.
...At the outset, she appears benign, and she's first seen wearing a rust dress that makes her seem a bit like a nutty professor. But as her ambition grows, her look changes radically. "You see her being revealed for her wickedness," says Hilferty. "For Morrible, I looked at pictures of Queen Elizabeth I, whose clothes made her look like something from another planet. Her hair was pushed way back on her forehead. That's how Morrible appears at the end. Her forehead is tight and hard. The front of her bodice has so much beading on it that it's like a plate of armour. She has high collars that cut off her head, so her face seems to be pushed forward like a plate."

First Day At Shiz: The first dress we see her in is sort of a cross between a kimono and a stereotypical Edwardian gown. It's tagged as "Shiztress"

Emerald City Dress: This could be confusing, because we see her in the Emerald City twice, but this is the dress she wears when she meets Glinda and Elphaba. It's a bright shade of green with gold accents, and very heavily beaded and embroidered. It is tagged as "Press Secretary"

Politician Dress: This is the dress she wears during Thank Goodness, when Glinda announces her "surprise" engagement. It looks like a huge boa. Or possibly she killed and ate a Muppet. It is tagged as "boa"

Mandarin Dress: And this is her final costume. She's come a long way from the simple Shiztress, hasn't she? It is tagged as "boa".

Wicked Costume Directory: NessaRose

Alone and loveless here,
With just the girl in the mirror
Just her and me: the Wicked Witch of the East!
We deserve each other...
~Nessa Rose, "The Wicked Witch of the East"

NessaRose Thropp, Elphaba's little disabled sister, is kind of an interesting case. She of the "tragically beautiful" face starts out as a pretty unimportant figure, then gets shunted into place as one of the figures in the Galinda/Elphaba/Fiyero/Boq Love Dodecahedron. As her love for Boq is completely unrequited, she turns into a scary stalker chick, and by the time Elphaba comes back to check on her in Act 2, she's become the Wicked Witch of East.

Poll results: Next Character to Focus on

Well, it was an interesting run. At the beginning, Ariel got the very first vote. Then Christine got a few, and it looked like she was going to be the definite lead. A couple of days into the poll, Elphaba got her first vote--and then antoher--and well, she is the winner by a landslide of 12 votes. (The second place winner, Christine, only got 7.)

things I have done lately by corbyjane

So, welcome newcomers blahblahblah.
My traffic increased by about 500 people the day Maggie posted my link on her homepage. This probably means my personal blog (which was where costume posts were originally) will decrease in numbers, but it's okay.

Updates on Glinda costumes...

Julia (involved in the German production of Wicked) emailed me to give me LOTS of info about Glinda & Elphaba's costumes, as well as sending me a TON of behind the scenes pictures. All the pictures are being integrated into the normal galleries on photobucket, but you can see all of hers in one gallery here.

I just called to say...

...I'm really burned out, between theatre and school and work, etc (all three of which are discussed indepth on my personal blogs) and while I'm still collecting photos and such, there may not be updates until the next time I feel like procrastinating.
SO yeah.

Adelaide's Costumes now on Photobucket

Photobucket

Guys&Dolls costumes were designed by Paul Tazewell. This is, of course, the shortlived 2009 revival that lasted like three weeks. Starring Lauren Graham...

I know nothing about the show (I watched the DVD for 20 minutes and then fell asleep) so they are listed randomly.

The "Sparklies" can be found here.

Susan on Glinda and Elphaba (from SusanHilftery.com)

From SusanHilferty.com (check it out for info on Wicked's Costume Designer, Susan's sketches, interviews, and more!):

Glinda is the epitome of good, so I did research by asking little girls what goodness looks like. They said like a princess, like a bride. I collected and studied pictures of Queen Elizabeth II from her coronation, Lady Diana’s wedding dress, and all of the dresses that are emblematic of perfect femininity. When you look at any of the English coronation images, it’s hysterical, because it’s all about impressing in a certain way. Even Queen Elizabeth, in the 1950s, wore a crown and a long robe and held her scepter, and I wanted to tap into that. Glinda is also connected to the sky, sun, and stars. That influenced her tiara and wand. The sparkles on her dress are all about that, too. She symbolizes lightness, air, bubbles. Kristin is someone you know loves costumes, because she comes from a beauty pageant background. She can wear any kind of heel, and she knows makeup and hair. But she wanted to be transformed to be Glinda. We did a lot of fittings. I had to find just the right proportion in her Glinda dress, because she is tiny, tiny, tiny. She can get swallowed up in a second. It’s like one ruffle too many and you’re over the top.

I didn't even know that about Kristin being in pageants... you'd think she's too short; I thought they had to be like eight million miles high and two wide. Haha.

Elphaba is exactly the opposite. I see her as connected to things that are inside the earth. So the patterns and textures I wove into her dress include fossils, stalactites, or striations that you see when you crack a stone apart. I mixed different colors into her skirt, so everything is literally twisted. And there was no issue with Idina about whether a costume was or wasn’t flattering. Idina is unbelievably gorgeous, but she’s not at all obsessed with her looks. When I designed her clothes for Shiz, I gave her heavy boots, so right away she’s connected to the earth, and then a cap that she pulls down low. Plus, she keeps her hands in her pockets. Idina completely embraced the idea of a young girl trying to hide herself. Now, by the time she gets to the Emerald City, she feels she belongs. I change her shoes so that she has a lighter pair. We take her glasses away, her hair comes down, and she’s wearing a lighter color. And suddenly she feels accepted and even, you could say, fashionable. Glinda tells her at the end of Act I not to be afraid and she answers, “I’m not.”

Wicked: Costume Directory: Elphaba Thropp

A rundown of the costumes Elphaba wears in the musical.

Her Shiz Uniform is navy, in direct contrast to Galinda's cream.
On her First Day, she wears a navy blazer with black (or maybe a darker navy?) piping over a pleated dress and a dickey. She also wears a knitted cap.
Article (coming soon!) Gallery

For the Ball, she takes off the dickey and blazer, and adds the hat Galinda gives her.
Article (coming soon!) Gallery

After becoming "Galindafied", she wears a different blazer (presumably of Galinda's) which is highnecked, form-fitting, and mutton-sleeves.
Article (coming soon!) Gallery

When she goes to the Emerald City, she wears a very Victorian black gown. It has a mandarin collar, mutton-sleeves, a light, swishy skirt, and a pointed waist with buttons to the neck. She also wears the hat, and during Defying Gravity, Glinda gives her a black cloak, she magics a broom, and presto! becomes the "Wicked Witch" we all know and love.
Article (coming soon!) Gallery

During Act 2, she wears the same dress as before, only, due to her rampaging across the country saving animals she's never even met, it's ripped, patched, and turned on itself--Susan Hilferty says there are 14 different fabrics, which is 5 more than Galinda's bubble gown. I also heard a rumour that it weighs 95 pounds and that Shoshana Bean lost 45 pounds while playing Elphaba... but who knows whether these are true.

Introduction, about, etc.

In case you're not able to read the sidebars, this is a site dedicated to costumes in Broadway musicals. I will do my best to catalogue, analyse, and provide making-of tips of costumes seen in productions such as Wicked the Musical, Legally Blonde the Musical, Little Mermaid on Broadway, and many more. This is dependent on whatever time I have available, and whatever I'm interested in...
