Glinda's Crown & Wand

PhotobucketAs promised... this is mostly just a holding page until I have time to actually analyse the wand & crown. This is taken from my comment on Glinda's costuming directory.

The Crown: it’s made up of stars or snowflakes like the wand’s tip. It looks like there are 9 total: there’s a big one in the very centre (about 3” in diameter) and they taper off in size until it ends past her ear. I think the snowflakes are mounted above a circlet, because if you look closely at the pictures, they almost float above the hairline. Also, the crystals in the crown aren’t just white crystals: you can see in the more studio-like pix that there’s a sky blue in there that matches the dress. An anonymous commenter says she's heard that it is made out of glass.
Glinda wears the crown with the Engagement Gown and the Bubble Gown.

The wand is basically a silver snowflake with white and blue crystals mounted on a silver/steel rod. I think the snowflake is about 5-6” across, and while the length of the wand varies (based on the height of the actress) it seems to run between 3-4 feet.

Julia sent me this great resolution shot of the wand's head:

I have uploaded over 150 new pictures to the Wand And Crown gallery.

I'm pretty sure London (and Stuttgart too) have a different kind of wand to the US productions - the spokes on the snowflake go out in every direction instead of just being circular.

Also, I can't remember if this was the bubble dress crown, or the ballgown crown, or both, but according to the videos on the costumes in the V&A museum in London, the crown is actually made of glass.

Are you talking about the one that looks like this?

Because that one I've only seen in the pictures from Kristin's dress.

But that's interesting about the crown; I am almost positive it's the same crown from the Bubble and the Engagement gown. not sure, though.

Yeah, the London wand is similar to that one with Kristin's dress, with all the spokes pointing in different directions - slightly different, but more similar to that than to the other US wands, like in this Helen picture here:

Dianne's is the same, and Lucy's too I think, so it's clearly another European difference.

that wand is on display with Kristin's dress in NY at the behind the emerald curtain tour but she did not use that one that is one of the European versions the one Kristin used in SF is alot like the style they used now but just chunker then the bottom had a swirl and some crystals on it

About two years ago I got to tour the costumes while Wicked was playing at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. The wardrobe supervisor there said that there are different versions of Glinda's crown. As the show progresses and she becomes more entangled in the mess of Oz the "center" of the crown (the biggest snowflake) moves off center.

Hey, there! I found a video on Youtube that features the Bubble Dress, the Crown, and the Wand. Megan Hilty guest-starred on Deal or No Deal, and, as a result, there are tons of clear shots of the crown and wand! Anyone who's trying to make the crown and wand should check it out! Don't know if you've seen it before, but I hope it'll be helpful. It's pretty nice resolution, too, and you can clearly see that the "stars" on the crown are set above a circlet, just like you deduced. :)
