Legally Blonde: Bruiser

I don't anticipate doing multiple posts for this one, even though a preliminary look seems to indicate that Bruiser's got nearly as many costumes as his mistress. Oy ve! My computer with all my LBTM pix is in the shop for the forseeable future, so I just went through my PB archives.

I have no pix of him during Omigod. On the computer, yes; online no. But he is in that scene.

Harvard: Looks like an argyle sweater. Becky's is maroon with grey and Bailey's is grey with pink. Not finding my LBB pix at the moment.

Chip on Your Shoulder: Magenta fleece (?) vest with orange accents. Too cute! We used to have a chihuahua  (RIP Tippy, the least obnoxious chihuahua ever!) and they run really cold... this would be a very simple and useful project for your Bruiser.

Legally Blonde news

Hey guys, once again, sorry I'm so slow on updating stuff. Uhm, so here's some news! If you didn't know (I haven't posted it, but it's all over the place) a mini version of Legally Blonde the Musical is running in Korea. It's been really hard to find any pictures that aren't promos (which notoriously use completely different costumes) so I've been working off what I find on youtube, and you can expect a few screen captures soon(ish). So far it looks like the costumes are EXTREMELY different; for instance, the playboy bunny suit has a little fluffy skirt, the finale dress is shortwaisted, and the Positive outfit is a miniskirt and little vest.

Also, Legally Blonde is going to the Philipines and according to Wikipedia starts June this year. I haven't seen any pix on this--if you got them, send them in!

Also, and I initially found this via Lauren Zakrin's twitter, there's a Netherland production of Legally Blonde. There's a video of the cast performing So Much Better at some awards gala here. My thoughts on the costumes? Yikes! I do not like the pointy shoulders that Elle is wearing. And the promo is even worse:
Is that what people wear in the Netherlands? Or is that how they think we dress? Thoughts?

First look at Legally Blonde costumes on West End

So I kind of dropped the ball on these ones, but the press release just came through, and we get our first look at Sheridan Smith in Legally Blonde the Musical! Yay!

The costumes look pretty similar, for the most part. They have little tweaks that make them look newish. In the video, you can see the "Serious" dress, which looks a little different, but not by much, in my opinion, as well as the Legally Blonde (Remix) dress.
What do you think of their sound?

Legally Blonde: Elle's Graduation Robe

Photobucket

Ladies and gentlemen of the class of two thousand and--
--here's the part where she makes her big speech
We're all proud, but Elle's not one to preach
So she said we could play Where Are They Now!
Here we go!

Legally Blonde: Remix Dress

"I said I'm never wearing that again--I'm wearing THIS!"

Elle wears this dress under her coat when she's heading back to California. She stops to say goodbye to Paulette, and is surprised by Vivian and Enid, who are eager to get her "back on the case, back to the trial". She says no to the navy blue suit they've brought her, and goes "back in her style".

Introduction, about, etc.

In case you're not able to read the sidebars, this is a site dedicated to costumes in Broadway musicals. I will do my best to catalogue, analyse, and provide making-of tips of costumes seen in productions such as Wicked the Musical, Legally Blonde the Musical, Little Mermaid on Broadway, and many more. This is dependent on whatever time I have available, and whatever I'm interested in...

Legally Blonde: Positive

"This is Harvard--not a stripper bar!"

Outfit Overview:

  • Pink newsboy cap
  • Pink jacket
  • Pink capped-sleeve t-shirt (in the sketch, but in some pictures, you can see it's a tank) with HARVARD in purple glitter across the front
  • Purple capri jeans, belted with snakeskin belt, with flowery embroidery up the sides
  • Snakeskin high-heeled boots that come just below the knee
  • She carries her signature Schmancy bag (which she later hands off to Becky during the dance break) and wears her signature Tiffany's necklace and bracelet set.

THE HAT:

Pink plaid newsboy cap. You can see green, yellow, and purple in the stripes.

JACKET

The jacket/blazer appears to have evolved a lot over the course of the show.

San Francisco: In this early picture from the original SF debut, you can see it's a denim blazer with two buttons (only the top one, right under the bust, is fastened). Also, the sleeve (look at the left hand holding the leash) is pointed. It has one flap-breast pocket on the left side, and one at the waist on the left. I can't see if there's a waist-pocket on the right side, and as this is the only photo I can find of this jacket...

denim

San Francisco II: In later pictures from the SF run, you see an entirely different jacket, still technically a blazer. (Note it's the same hat, shirt, and jeans, by the way). This very unique collarless jacket has a scoop-neck that closes with what I'm assuming is an eye-hook just below the lettering on the t-shirt. The fabric is the most interesting part of it, I think: it looks like a shades-of-pink paisley jacquard.

jacquardjacquard

The sleeves are open (I think: look at the right hand) and trimmed with a matching pink braid—I think it's probably some combination of the fabric, because you can see bits of red and purple mixed in with the trim.

jacquardjacquard

Where the shirt is open, you can see it's self-lined. I think it must be boned because of the stiffness of the blazer when she's moving around. For example, the dance-break (plus also, an instance where the "t-shirt's" true tanky colours are revealed!)

jacquard

Broadway (LBB): Prolly my favourite incarnation, this one looks more like a windbreaker or a jacket than a blazer.

broadway

The fabric is shiny, probably some kind of vinyl leatherette. (if this is the case... it must be horrible for dancing) You can see the lining on the inside is crumpled (so probably some kind of china silk or substitute). There is a collar at the neck. The closures look like dark coloured (brown, black, magenta) snaps, and I can see two at the neck, but no others, and since she always wears it undone, I would assume there aren't any others. It also fastens at the sleeves. There is a cord (probably for adjusting) at the waist.

broadway

I can't tell if there are pockets. She doesn't hold any small props, so probably not.

[Analysis later, pending better images]

Broadway (Bailey): I don't like this one, and I don't know if it's because I dislike Bailey, or because it doesn't fit my idea of "Elle", but yeah.

baileybailey

This one is basically a jacket, and it reminds me of puffy jackets skiers wear. Also, the fabric is crumpled, and I think it looks like she just got out of bed.

bailey

The collar folds over, and is so wide it reaches over her shoulders. There is a pocket on her right shoulder, and other than that I can't see any other pockets. There's a zipper closure, and it looks like the waist is elasticised to be more form fitted. I don't see any closures on the sleeves.

bailey

Tour (Becky): Happy medium! Becky's jacket is very much like Bailey's, but it lacks the poufy and monstrous look hers has. This may have to do with the fact that Bailey is much more full-figured than Becky (IMO).

becky

Note the differences between Becky's and previous outfits: Bruiser's leash is now pink, the jacket collar is folded over.

becky

Other than its increased form-fittedness and the collar, the jacket itself is about the same as Bailey's. (note the consistency of the folded-over collar: I wonder if Becky thinks it's annoying? I think I would...)

becky

Oh, and here's one I can't find any other pictures of:

Becky on Broadway: This is the same fabric as the jacquard SF coat, but the neckline is different (though it has the trim from the SF coat on the neckline). I can't find any other pictures of it on LBB or Bailey, though...

HARVARD TANK TOP

Very basic knit tank (not ribbed "beater"). Scoop neck. Body of the tank is a medium pink; edged in a darker pink on the neckline and sleeves (not at the waist). The lettering is pink surrounded by large silver glitter. For a while, a copy of this was available on eBay, but I haven't seen it for a while.

JEANS

These along with the blazer changed the most over the course of the show.

San Francisco: Purple wash capri jeans (cuffed over the boots); flowery embroidery. Fairly standard model: low cut, front and back pockets, etc. Close-ups of the embroidery below.

jeanssf embroiderysf embroidery

Broadway (LBB): Somewhere between SF and Broadway, changes occurred (because they are in some later promo shots, but not the first ones). The jeans look the same, except that the embroidery is gone and instead of being cuffed, the jeans are tucked into the boots. Whether they're still capris or are now regular length, I can't tell.

broadway jeans

Broadway (Bailey) & Tour (Becky) : Major change!

Well, colourwise, anyways. The pants are now either a hot pink or a red, depending on what photos you're looking at.

XOXO!

Legally Blonde: So Much Better

"Seeing my name up on that list: That beats the first time that we kissed!"
The costume consists of three parts: * A denim jacket * A lavender lacy camisole * The piece de resistance: a oversized houndstooth dark pink on light pink print skirt. She wears her everpresent Tiffany's necklace and bracelet, her hair nicely and casually styled, and nude coloured shoes. First: The Jacket I LOVE this jacket. I WANT this jacket. Ugh! The jacket is light wash denim, cropped--just at the waist, no shorter or longer--and has 3/4 sleeves. There are five largish silver buttons down the front, and has four pockets: two tabbed ones right over the breast that look like they're mostly for decoration, and two underneath the other pockets. I don't know how to describe them, but they're shaped more like hoodie pockets. Her left pocket (is LBB left-handed?) is where she keeps her cell phone (Who else can I tell? Oh wait--where's my cell? Mom will fall on the floor... HEY MOM!)--you can see the tip of it poking out. And take this from me: YOU CANNOT FIND A JACKET LIKE THIS ANYWHERE. (But if you do, let me know!). Not exactly like it. The best I found was a dark wash. Anyways, that's the jacket. The Cami This is one of the things that changed when Bailey came onto the scene. However, the only good pictures of the original undershirt are when Bailey and Autumn wore it on the finale show. (And this is the same as the one LBB wore.) Photobucket The cami is some kind of lavender knit with pink lace at the neck. You can see the zig zag patterns sort of in the above image, and the following ones: Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket and finally, Photobucket Bailey's cami is a wrap-around lavendar knit with darker purple ties, and she wears it over a light pink button-up blouse. Photobucket The Skirt "At Harvard... they wear traditional menswear fabrics; they wear houndstooth and pinstripe and chalkstripe, so we wanted her to have a skirt that was houndstooth, but Elle-ised. So, it's pink, and it's big, and it looks like Elle." --Gregg Barnes, on THE AMAHZING SKIRT. What do we know? It is flared (maybe with godets, but maybe not: I can't find a seam ANYWHERE, but how do you get this kind of flare Photobucket without the help of godets? The pattern is an oversized magenta houndstooth on a pale pink background. PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket Bailey's version (rumoured to be a reject from the SF production brought back to save a buck or two making a new one) is a ghastly magenta on lavendar. I hate it... I was hoping it was just bad lighting in the promo shots, but youtube videos confirm the lavendar tint. PhotobucketPhotobucket
